Current Status and Outlook

Tropical Storm (TS) SURIGAE has strengthened into a Severe Tropical Storm (STS) and has drifted west-northwestward slowly during the past 6 hours…expected to enter the southeastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow morning. 

STS SURIGAE is forecast to become a Typhoon (TY) by tomorrow afternoon and shall start accelerating west-northwestward across the Philippine Sea for the next 48 hours. Further intensification is anticipated as it moves closer to the coastal areas of Samar and Bicol Provinces. 

Where is  SURIGAE? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, April 15…0900 GMT:

  • Location of Center: Over Western Micronesia (near 8.9°N 136.0°E)
  • Distance 1: 242 km northeast of Koror, Republic of Palau
  • Distance 2: 110 km east of PAR
  • Distance 3: 1,071 km east of Surigao Del Sur, Mindanao (PH)
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 95 kph near the center…Gustiness: 120 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) West-Northwest @ 04 kph, towards the Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • The 3 to 5-day forecast (Sunday to Tuesday) shows SURIGAE becoming a major typhoon with winds of more than 200 kph, with its movement slowing down to about 10 kph as it veer towards the north. It shall be about 300 km to the east of Bicol Region during its close approach, with no landfall.  Kindly take note that the 3 to 5-day forecast remains uncertain with 30-65% chance (Low to Medium Probability). Kindly refer to our attached StormWatch Track for the forecast wind speeds and forecast movement of this cyclone.
  • Please continue to monitor the progress of this storm as a shift on its track towards the west will bring typhoon conditions across Eastern & Northern Samar, and Eastern Bicol Region particularly the island province of Catanduanes.
  • Once this storm enters PAR, it will be named domestically by PAGASA as “BISING.”
  • This StormWatch is valid for the next 24 hours.
