TROPICAL STORM ISANG (OMAIS) STORMWATCH NO. 02 [FINAL]

Current Status and Outlook

ISANG has intensified into a Tropical Storm, and is now named globally as “OMAIS” – a Palauan word for “wandering around”…moving closer to Miyakojima while moving north-northwest across the North Philippine Sea.

This storm is forecast to intensify further into a Severe Tropical Storm (STS) within the next 12 to 24 hours and will continue moving north-northwestward across the East Taiwan Sea. It is likely to exit the northern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow morning (Aug 22) and will pass over or very close to Miyakojima between 7-9 AM.

Since the storm is expected to be outside of PAR by tomorrow afternoon, this will be the final stormwatch on this Tropical Cyclone.

Where is ISANG (OMAIS)? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, August 21…0900 GMT:

  • Location of Center: Over the northwestern portion of the North Philippine Sea (near 22.4°N 127.4°E)
  • Distance 1: 599 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes
  • Distance 2: 343 km southeast of Miyakojima, Japan
  • Distance 3: 413 km south of Okinawa, Japan
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 85 kph near the center…Gustiness: 100 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) North-Northwest @ 15 kph, towards Miyakojima.

  • Since TS ISANG (OMAIS) is far away from the Philippine Landmass, no direct effect is expected from this system.
  • The storm is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow morning (Aug 22) between 9-11 AM, after passing over or very close to Miyakojima.
